Annunciation — St. Ursula & the Eleven Thousand Virgins series.

2002. Coloured pencil and drawing ink on mylar. Size 32" x 24"

St. Ursula and the Eleven Thousand Virgins began with a very simple premise: what if you possessed supernatural powers? Would you travel backwards in time and meet your younger self? What, if anything, would you communicate to yourself? Part camp and part catharsis, this series allowed me to indulge this fantasy. Over the past several years, my work has tackled such far-ranging and politically-charged issues as childhood sexual abuse and animal rights. Similarly, St. Ursula traversed both political and personal territory. Adopting the role of the Catholic Saint Ursula, patroness and protector of school girls, this quasi-autobiographical series explored societal angst surrounding female sexuality and the resultant systems of control exerted upon women.
