Amoretta — Gravid series. 2003. Intaglio. 5.5" x 5.5"

My current series Gravid continues my diaristic approach to image-making with an exploration of pregnancy & motherhood. As my role as primary caregiver to my child develops and evolves, so too does the content of my work to reflect the many corollary issues relating to motherhood, including gender identity, sexuality and body image. My aim is to present an honest and unsentimentalized view of motherhood that challenges the clichéd images often found in the mainstream media.

Gravid has proved my most adventurous series to date in my use of mixed media. Recent drawings feature experimentation with less traditional forms of mark-making, such as the technique of frottage and the use of sandpaper to score the drawing surface. Gravid also features materials that recall the realm of domesticity, such as stencils and sewing.

Gravid debuted at Red Head Gallery, Toronto in June of 2005. As I continue to work on this series, an expanded version of Gravid will show at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery in Toronto in July 2006.
